Ride took an unexpected turn with its third album, Carnival of Light. Where previous albums had explored Ride's interest in heavily distorted guitars and hazy shades of twisted atmospheres—making the band one of shoegazing's brightest stars—Carnival of Light takes the group into a classic rock mode that's at its best on the Byrds-like "1000 Miles." While some fans will surely miss the overpowering walls of sound, some engaging pop moments are present here. "From Time to Time" starts with a Fender Rhodes riff before finding its dreamspace. A bit more reverb would've made it a Ride classic, but fans of late-'60s Byrds and Buffalo Springfield should warm up to its soothing buzz. "Only Now" and "Birdman" throw a mellotron onto gentle swirling numbers. "Crown of Creation" floats with a sweet Hammond organ reinforcing its sweet, mellow gait. A cover of The Creation's "How Does It Feel?" sports some animated, loud guitar. Andy Bell's "Endless Road" is an impressive (but very un-Ride-like) pop song. Three b-sides from the era are added for further value.
