The Pastels were riding a peak of creativity in the mid-'90s. Their album of 1995, Mobile Safari, is one of the band's best and so is the Worlds of Possibility EP. The first track is one of the truly great songs from that album, the bubbling "Worlds of Possibility," remixed with an extra dose of dubby sunshine by Ian Carmichael (producer of the Orchids and member of One Dove). The rest of the EP shows off the dark and light sides of the group. "Photogram" is a grinding, dissonant track with very aggressive guitars and an impassioned Aggi Wright vocal, "Ever Far" is a sparse and melancholic ballad with a moody vocal from Stephan Pastel. These two are balanced by the almost insanely bright and sparkling lo-fi version of the Groove's bubblegum soul classic "Love, It's Getting Better." Katrina Mitchell's vocals here (and on "Worlds" as well) are lighter than air and sweeter than a pixie stick. The Worlds of Possibility EP is the sound of the Pastels at their finest.
