With a sound that neatly bridged classic 1960s Motown with the emerging Philly sound, the Ethics were an unsung vocal group that really deserved wider exposure. Led by the ethereal tenor and solid songwriting skills of Ron Tyson (who became a member of the later-era Temptations), the Ethics produced quality singles for independent labels Wale, Vent, and Golden Fleece in the late '60s, and while they never managed any big hits, in a fair and balanced world they would have. This collection has a remarkable cohesion, and it feels a bit like listening to some alternative version of the classic Eddie Kendricks/David Ruffin lineup of the Temptations. It's difficult to imagine why songs like "Standing in the Darkness," "I Want My Baby Back," "Farewell," "Lonely Hearts," and "Lost in a Lonely World" weren't all over the airwaves. With a longer running time than the collection available from Collectables, this is the one to get if you're curious about this fine quartet.
