Carl Wilson was taking a stronger leadership role in The Beach Boys as his brother Brian settled into the songwriting margins. Guitarist Blondie Chaplin and drummer Ricky Fataar were added to the band, and the sound took a very different turn. Carl & The Passions was a band Carl had been involved with during his teen years, but the approach on this set is anything but nostalgic. "You Need a Mess of Help to Stand Alone," written by Brian Wilson and manager Jack Rieley, features Carl on lead vocals and is a modern jump toward '70s AOR. It's got a decent funk and solid piano, as does the Fataar-Chaplin spotlight "Here She Comes." It isn't until "He Come Down"—featuring the group vocals of Mike Love, Al Jardine, Carl Wilson, and Chaplin—that a sense of the old band comes sailing by. The Brian Wilson highlight is the retro-gazing "Marcella," while on "Make It Good" and "Cuddle Up," Dennis Wilson foreshadows the solo work he'd do with the excellent Pacific Ocean Blue with Daryl Dragon (later of Captain & Tennille fame).
