Right from the opening song “MakeDamnSure,” it’s obvious that Taking Back Sunday have honed their live set to the point where they can play it acoustically without having to hide behind guitar distortion. Live from Orensanz is the Amityville, New York quintet’s second live album. And playing in the 150-year old synagogue that is Angel Orensanz Center (in New York’s Lower East Side) makes the opening organ notes on “New Again” sound more reverent than the studio take. The small string section added to “My Blue Heaven” adds another dimension to the tune, even if the driving tempo and rhythm aren’t much different than the original. With sing-along audience participation on “Set Phasers to Stun” and a flurry of enthusiastic applause following, it’s safe to say that Taking Back Sunday’s fans were truly appreciative of this intimate setting. “Cute Without the ‘E’ (Cut from the Team)” lets the crowd in on more fun as singer Adam Lazzara takes a back seat on the verses to let his fans perform the song à la Tom Petty’s live version of “Break Down.”
