Spin Doctors made their bones in the nascent '80s jam-rock scene of the great Northeast. It was nearly a fluke that their pop material connected with the mainstream and made them radio favorites for about a year, when "Little Miss Can't Be Wrong," "Two Princes," and "Jimmy Olsen's Blues" dominated the airwaves. However, Spin Doctors' hardcore fans were always more interested in how well their favorite jam bands could, well, jam. And with 2013's If the River Was Whiskey, Spin Doctors give their audience an entire album of the blues. Not bluesy rock; the blues. This lets drummer Aaron Comess lay back in the pocket and guitarist Eric Schenkman stretch out and show everyone what an underrated guitarist he is. Even singer Chris Barron gets a chance to relax and give it his best shot, though he never dares to try to mimic a Southern bluesman. The recordings were made in drummer Comess' studio, and the result is an album that's as unpretentious and non-fussed as possible. You can hear the room on the album no matter where you check in.
