This collection of tracks recorded between 1994-2003 — released only on vinyl, limited release compilations, as b-sides to international singles, or not at all — present a lazy and expansive Sonic Youth. Though hardly a band known for acknowledging commercial pressures, Sonic Youth did ensure that their proper albums had a guiding structure that led their listeners on a mapped journey to the alternative side of the musical universe. These are the side-trips: long, instrumental passages where the band experiment with their equipment and the recording studio’s many options, uncovering ideas that would be pressed into service elsewhere but had their genesis in these freeform jams and loops. Unlike many of their side projects — Ciccone Youth, anyone? — The Destroyed Room isn’t a self-indulgent mess. “Blink” from the Pola X soundtrack is a worthy addition to their canon, while Sonic Nurse outtake “Fire Engine Dream” and the obscure compilation track “Loop Cat” are ambient buzzes that scale the group’s quieter side. Ever since their earliest days on the NYC post-punk, experimental no-wave scene, Sonic Youth have dared to offend and alienate. They’ve come a long way and so has the music scene that no longer hears them as extreme.
