From his days as a member of the V-Roys to his collaborations these days with the Commonwealth, Scott Miller evinces a true, gritty, salt-of-the-earth sound that perfectly compliments his working class anthems. His gruff voice, reminiscent of supporter Steve Earle, brings a natural, seductive twist to his social commentary in the sadly accurate “Cheap Ain’t Cheap (For Crying Out Loud)” where his sense of economic meltdown has come all too true, especially in the parts of the country where his heart and music originate. The bluesy “Sin In Indiana,” the roadhouse workouts of the shuffling “Let You Down” and swash-buckling “Claire Marie,” the attention-grabbing duet with Patty Griffin on the softly romantic “I’m Right Here My Love” and the serene acoustic illumination of the album closer “Appalachian Refugee” are further examples that some of the best music being recorded in 2009 is being done quite independently, as this release was self-financed from the sales of Miller’s previous self-released demos.
