The U.K. knows what American music fans have yet to fully realize: Scottish singer Sandi Thom is the real deal. She sings in a number of styles—folk, blues, soul—and does so with an honesty that that makes her whole body shake. For Flesh and Blood, she's helped along with production from The Black Crowes' Rich Robinson, who insists on keeping things natural; and together they manage a convincing funk for "Stormy Weather" and turn Leadbelly's "In the Pines" into a powerful blues and soul vamp that's miles away from Nirvana's take on the tune. Sonny Boy Williamson's "Help Me" gets a blistering treatment, with the electric guitar and harmonica putting up a decent fight. Canadian-American Cree folk legend Buffy Sainte-Marie joins Thom for a gorgeous acoustic take of her 1992 single "The Big Ones Get Away"; it's closer to Thom's folk roots, which are present on her previous albums. The deluxe version adds an acoustic take of the title track, along with an excellent interpretation of Guns N' Roses' "November Rain."
