On one level, Rush of Fools’ Carry Us Now is very much a contemporary studio creation, combining the sort of bracing acoustic folk sounds popularized by Mumford & Sons and The Avett Brothers with touches of electronica and radio-friendly pop. But it’s equally true that this Alabama-rooted Christian quintet’s fourth album is inspired by the traditions of church hymnody, adding greater weight to its spiritual content. Carry Us Now can be classed as a worship project, with frontman Wes Willis’ earnest Everyman vocals giving its lyrics the quality of personal prayers. Tracks like “Take Me Over,” “My Heart Cries Out,” and “Lord Have Mercy” are reverent calls for salvation offered with humility and gratitude. Particularly striking is “Power in the Blood,” a galloping number that revisits the timeless language of a classic hymn within a fresh musical context. Sparkling mandolin and rousing gang vocals boost the energy level of “Lay Me Down,” while a caressing string arrangement enhances the contemplative mood of “God of My Salvation.” An acoustic reworking of the band’s 2007 breakthrough hit “Undo” closes with a final prayer for redemption and healing.
