Phil Ochs’ final years weren't happy ones, but his performance here in Lansing, Mich., in 1973 is touching and in fantastic fidelity. Bootleg tapes and files have traded hands for years, but these professionally mastered tracks ensure that all the nasty asides Ochs throws at Richard Nixon and Billy Graham are easily discernible. Though Ochs suffered with a great depression, he’s in sharp focus here, wondering how Nixon hadn’t been impeached (it was still 14-plus months before Nixon’s resignation) when all evidence pointed against him. This is well covered in his rewrite of “Here’s to the State of Mississippi,” changed here to reference Nixon. Overall, Ochs’ protest songs are a small part of the show, though he does still perform many early songs such as “Ballad of a Carpenter,” “The Bells,” “The Highwayman,” “Santo Domingo,” and “I Ain’t A-Marchin’ Anymore.” Combined with later songs like “Chords of Fame,” “Boy in Ohio,” “Pretty Smart on My Part,” and “Pleasures of the Harbor,” Live in Lansing 1973 is a complete look at Ochs’ career in one stirring concert.
