Teaming up with their old producer Brendan O'Brien, who twirled the knobs for their classic albums and remixed their debut, Pearl Jam attempt to nail down their punk rock roots on 2009's Backspacer with the aggressive ferocity of "Gonna See My Friend" and "Got Some." It's an attack they return to intermittently in order to shake the heaviness in their souls. However, it's in Eddie Vedder's DNA to sing with the weight of the world on his shoulders and it wouldn't be a Pearl Jam album if he didn't do some of his best work in the quieter, more reflective spaces. Album closer "The End" (not The Doors song!) is reminiscent of his solo work on the Into the Wild soundtrack, while the ballad "Just Breathe" recalls not their punk rock roots, but their debts to English prog-folk gods Jethro Tull. "The Fixer" perks up as a measured uptempo with an unusual positive sense. "Johnny Guitar" throws together powerchords from The Who playbook. "Amongst the Waves" comes closest to classic Pearl Jam grandeur with organ and guitars blending in dramatic fashion.
