The Blue Nile were known for their restrained arrangements, but on his own Paul Buchanan strips his sound down further. Engineered by Cameron Malcolm (son of Blue Nile producer Calum Malcolm), Mid Air was largely recorded at Buchanan’s flat. It was conceived not as an album, but as a process where Buchanan aimed to write songs for a still-unmade solo album by Shirley Manson of Garbage. This un-self-conscious way of writing and recording ensured the songs were piano-based tone poems. The orchestration of the album’s lone instrumental, “Fin de Siecle,” expands on the subtlety. Just as a film by Ingmar Bergman or Robert Bresson excels in austerity, Buchanan’s Mid Air represents the bittersweet emotions that swirl together on a cold but steady winter’s night. Perhaps not surprisingly, this album was inspired, in part, by the death of a close friend. These songs embrace the beauty of living with the pragmatism that lets people soldier forward. The deluxe edition adds instrumental versions and previously unreleased bonus tracks: “Have You Ever Been Lonely” and “God Is Laughing.”
