With the explosive, unexpected success of Nirvana’s Nevermind, the band and its record label issued a set of frequently bootlegged material while Nirvana toured and worked up the songs for what would become In Utero. Nirvana had enough outtakes, limited-edition early singles, and live BBC radio recordings to assemble Incesticide, a collection truer to the band’s free spirit than its official studio albums. “Smells Like Teen Spirit” had introduced a well-produced alternative rock band with vague punk roots, but here two Vaselines covers (“Molly’s Lips,” “Son of a Gun”) and a Devo cover (“Turnaround”) were more Nirvana's style. The early single “Sliver” was a key track—as catchy as anything Cobain would ever write—while the version of “(New Wave) Polly” furthered the band's loose ends. “Been a Son” and “Aneurysm” stick closer to Nirvana's punk-pop side, while “Mexican Seafood,” “Hairspray Queen,” and “Aero Zeppelin” experiment toward the harder extremes.
