Jason Aldean is one of the few modern Nashville performers who can embody the new hard rock/country hybrid displayed on “She’s Country,” then turn around and just as convincingly deliver something as simply and gently soulful as “Big Green Tractor.” Part of what ties together Wide Open is the adaptability of Aldean’s voice. Even when his band's playing heavy metal, his voice never turns aggressive or overbearing. Conversely, when he decides to play it sweet, he doesn’t sound like a thug playing nice—he's the decent everyman, albeit one with a powerful set of pipes. The songs on Wide Open are consistently catchy, both musically and lyrically. Aldean has a way of making words stick, whether it’s the interlocking chorus of “This I Gotta See”—"front porch, iced tea, sweat shirt, bare feet"—or “Keep the Girl,” which illustrates a romantic Catch-22 with the image of a double-edged blade. In “Crazy Town,” Aldean calls Nashville “Hollywood with a touch of twang” and then notes that “love it or hate it, we’re all just trying to make it.” It’s a refreshingly earnest self-description from someone who's already mastered the craft of modern songwriting.
