On this companion album to 2001’s Born & Raised, Hawaii’s George Brooks Veikoso (a.k.a. Fiji) continues to braid hip-hop, reggae, and R&B with an earthy resonance. He digs deep into Polynesian roots with “Lomai Naleca (Opening Chant),” a stunningly beautiful recording of a cappella chants and natural percussion where vocal harmonies cascade with the beauty and strength of a waterfall. But it’s the following “Lonely Days” that perfectly blends a mellow reggae bounce with a heavy aloha vibe and some irie toasting by J-Boog. Fiji gives Harry Chapin’s “Cats in the Cradle” some deep island love and a sublime groove. He builds this on skittering rimshots and pillowy keyboard parts that provide a soft bed for Fiji’s layered vocal harmonies to hover above. “Love of My Life” is the kind of serenade every surfer girl wishes were written about her. Over buoyant rhythms and glistening keyboard notes, Fiji sings his heart out. J.R. from Common Kings makes a cameo in the similarly amorous “Empress.” Fiji’s dynamic voice perfectly suits a smooth cover of “Me and Mrs. Jones.”
