It’s hard to tally the number of soul and R&B hits Don Covay wrote. But no one can argue that his “Chain of Fools” isn’t one of the greatest R&B songs, or that The Rolling Stones shouldn’t have recorded his “Mercy Mercy,” or that Covay didn’t hugely influence Jagger’s singing. Covay’s own recording career flourished throughout the '60s (mostly on Atlantic) but slowly waned in later decades. This compilation collects some awesome but forgotten songs he did for the Janus and Versatile labels in the ’70s. Ramshackle arrangements and juiced-up playing (horns, piano, guitars) convey a live-in-a-speakeasy feel, and the sassy soul-funk of “Sweet Thang,” the disjointed reality of “Three Time Loser,” and an ear-bending version of “Hitchin’ a Ride” are highlights of many. The sparsely arranged loneliness of “I Don’t Think I Can Make It” is so rich you’ll likely ache down that road yourself. “Love Is Sweeter on the Other Side” would’ve done Sam Cooke as proud as “Standing in the Grits Line” would’ve greened Sly Stone with envy.
