The debut album from this Florida-based octet is a winning, if sometimes slightly ragged, mixture of vintage ska and Motown-era R&B with the occasional Latin accent. These guys have guts; the program here is all originals, and they pull it off nicely. "I Can't Explain," the album's lead track, is also one of its strongest, though the backup vocal arrangement on "What's Coming to You" is also a highlight. There are several excellent instrumentals, including the smooth and laid-back reggae of "Sound of Sitkara" and the jazzy, ska jive of "High-Five." The Coldspot 8's horn section is especially tight and the arrangements are sophisticated without being cerebral; the guitar and drums sometimes stray from each other a little bit, but Kyle Jones' booming upright bass keeps things under control. An added treat is the dub versions of "I Can't Explain" and "Sound of Sitkara," which end the album. Highly recommended.
