Ryjan Claybrook Kidwell, who records under the moniker Cex, has put out numerous albums, EPs, and singles since his 1998 debut, Cells. But when he released Tiny Creature in 2011, he still hadn’t reached his thirtieth birthday. Back in the ‘90s, Cex’s music was filed under IDM — Intelligent Dance Music; that tag has fallen by the wayside, but Kidwell continues to craft striking work. Tiny Creature opens with the rumbling, woozy “Dream Neighbor,” a track that displays a warped catchiness and a nice mixture of timbres. “Megamuse” finds shimmering textures jostling a reggae-like rhythm, while “Trumpetflower” has a gulping groove that’s festooned with melodic synth squiggles. “Critterpated” moves through a number of vibes in its 20 minutes; the track comes off as a descendent of ambient innovators such as Cluster and Edgar Froese. “Teen Witch” has a playfully spooky sound that evokes horror movies, and it also recalls ’90s drum & bass minus the obsessively hyperactive rhythms. The chill head-nodder “Ebyday,” which includes tabla-like tones in its layers of percussion, brings the album to a close.
