Candi Staton, a church-trained singer born an hour southeast of Muscle Shoals, Ala., makes an appearance in Greg Camalier’s esteemed documentary Muscle Shoals about the great musical contributions of Rick Hall and the northern Alabama–based musicians who made hits for Aretha Franklin, Etta James, Wilson Pickett, and others. Staton wasn’t a major hitmaker, but she was a formidable talent who continues to work many decades later, achieving a higher profile with albums such as His Hands and Who’s Hurting Now. Add Life Happens to that pile. This autobiographical album tells Staton's story in many directions. “I Ain’t Easy to Love” features recent Alabama stars Jason Isbell and John Paul White of The Civil Wars alongside trusty Memphis brass directed by none other than Rick Hall. Staton’s emotive vocal ability puts songs like “For Eternity,” “Even the Bad Times Are Good," and “Never Even Had a Chance” over the top, with the potential to become modern soul classics.
